I'm a rook with about 2 or 3 months of solo patrol under my belt, at best, but I also happened to be closest and first on the scene. I roll up, and my partner is on the ground, holding the bad guy down, with the help of a civilian. Bad guy's still struggling, not cuffed... and I remember almost walking over, and simply thinking "wow... OK, what do I do?" Kind of a moving freeze... Fortunately, my partner said something like "cuff him!" and I got it in gear...

Compare that to one of the last fights I had on patrol before I became a detective. We got called to a domestic dispute (meaning arguing, not fighting yet), and my partner and I missed several cues until the idiot backfisted her in the chest. I cleared the sofa between us before my partner could stand up (she wasn't hurt, just shocked), and slammed him into the couch. And the only reason it was the couch was because it was in the way of the floor...

It is a different world when you've gone "through the looking glass" to use your apt phrase. And it's something that doesn't explain well...

Lots of people won't accept that they might freeze for real, that there is a immeasurable difference between a real fight and sparring or "full resistance training" or anything else. There's even a difference between the guy who just wants to get away, and the guy who wants to HURT you.

For most folks -- denial's not a big problem. For LE, corrections, and some sorts of soldiers... it's a big problem. Current training practices do their best to counter it -- but there's still no substitute for that first real exposure. And they're response will almost certainly predict their success...jks9199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14473417.post-13157728940866488422009-09-07T20:02:06.074-07:002009-09-07T20:02:06.074-07:00Hi Rory,

I am a 15-year martial artist and have gained a lot from what you report.

Secondly, this post of yours reminded me of something I read over the last week about a reporter's mugging and his subsequent attempts to make sense of it. Maybe you'll find it interesting as well:

http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/September-2009/A-Mugging-on-Lake-Street/Alvinhttp://21dragons.comnoreply@blogger.com
