So we play with the technique and (let's be honest) decide either that it works or that that it would work if we were just stronger/faster/more skilled. But rarely does someone actually call bullshit on a technique if it is part of his/her martial art. (Calling bullshit on a technique in another system is much easier!)
I think martial arts schools should have a bullshit card. Everyone has to throw it down at least once per year. New students once in the first 6 months. The bullshit card doesn't necessarily mean "I don't think this would ever work" (although it could). Rather, it could mean, "Clarify when this would not work" or even, "Let's pressure test this to see if it works for someone my size." The point would be to break up group think, get students in the habit of questioning why/how/whether something works, and force instructors to give thorough explanations (or consider that the technique may be bullshit).
You could argue that a school shouldn't need a bullshit card to accomplish these goals, but I think physically throwing down a card would make students a little more ballsy and could be kind of funny.Tianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14473417.post-65524729317808755942017-03-20T19:12:36.394-07:002017-03-20T19:12:36.394-07:00Heh.
